A thesis entitled: “Characterization of PVC compounds and evaluation of their fire behavior focusing on the comparison between EN 60754-1 and EN 60754-2 in the assessment of the smoke acidity” has been presented by the master degree candidate Dr. Iacopo Bassi, under the supervision of Prof. Elisabetta Salatelli, Bologna University and of Dr. Francesca del Chiaro, Reagens S.p.A.
The main purpose of the research has been to demonstrate the clear difference between the smoke acidity values obtained carrying out EN 60754-1 and EN 60754-2, this one the standard used for assessing the additional class for acidity in cables, according to the Regulation (EU) No 305/2011 (Construction Product Regulation).
The final results are very explicative and show how EN 60754-2 is much more severe, because it does not have a heating ramp and it is performed at higher temperatures than EN 60754-1, hindering in this way the efficiency of acid scavengers in trapping HCl.
This conclusion is a further confirmation of data got in the past by Gruppo Cavi Italia partner of PVC4Cables (see also PVC Cables Conference 2019 and PVC4Cables Conference 2017).
